SAKALESHPUR

Sakaleshpur is located in the embracing Western Ghats that stretch all along from the South Indian state of Kerala to the Western India, Gujarat. It is a Taluk and hill station town in Hassan District, in the state of Karnataka of Southern India. Its temperate climate is favorable mainly for coffee, cardamom and pepper plantation. The town lies on National Highway 48 (NH-48) connecting Mangalore and Bangalore.
Historians believe that the region came under the rule of Chalukyas, Hoysalas and the Wadeyar Kings. During the reign of the Hoysalas, a broken Shivalingam was found around this region. The linga was called Sakaleshwara. Since then this region has been called Sakaleshpur having Sakaleshwara Temple built right at its entrance. Sakaleshwara Swami Ratha Yatra will also be held on a full moon day during the month of February every year. The recently built Holemalleshwara Temple may also be found near Sakaleshwara Temple. It is located next to the River Hemavathy.
Another legend says that the town was also known as “Sakala Aishwaryagalinda Koodida Pura” literally meaning “City of All Wealth and Prosperity”. The place is known for its richness in Coffee, Cardamom, Pepper etc. It is also a pleasant sight to watch River Hemavati flow by the picturesque hills of the Western Ghats. The name Shakala in Sanskrit is also known as “Bhinnavada” or “Birukada” meaning unique or inseparable.
