Located in the Western Ghats, right on the border between the southern states of Kerala and Karnataka, Kodagu or Coorg as it is popularly called is a nature lovers paradise.

Madikeri, the district head quarters of Coorg, is at a height of 1170 meters above sea level. It is a very popular hill station. Attractions at Madikeri are the Abbey falls, where the river Cauvery crashes down a steep rock face and the Raja’s Seat. The Raja’s seat is a small pavilion located at the western end of the city. It offers a spectacular view of the valley below particularly at sunset.

Coorg also has significant religious importance for pilgrims. Talacauvery, from where the river Cauvery originates is in Coorg. Another popular attraction is the town of Bhagamandala where the rivers Kanika, Sujyoti and Cauvery merge (called the Sangam).

Tourists can visit Bylakuppe, one of the biggest Tibetean settlements in India which is known for its handicrafts and monasteries. The 40 feet idols of the Namdroling Monastery (also called the Golden Monastery) is a popular attraction.

The Dubare elephant training camp is where one can see the daily routine of domesticated working animals and their mahouts is another very popular attraction. Elephant rides and river rafting are organized here.

Another popular attraction is the Nisargadhama. Nisargadhama is a island on the river cauvery. Access to the island is through a hanging bridge. The island, densely covered with huge bamboo plants has elephant rides and also a small zoo. Nisargadhama is a very popular picnic spot.
