Local Attraction
Kundapur is located on the western coast of India, in Udupi district in the state of Karnataka, India. The town is geographically unique as it is surrounded by water on three sides. Kundapur & the locales around it mainly attract 2 kinds of tourists; those on the look out for experiences amidst nature & those visiting religious places.
Beaches & Backwaters
- Kodi (4 km):
A pleasant beach located about 4 km from Kundapur, with views of the fishermen community on the way. - Maravanthe (12 km):
One of the most beautiful beaches in Karnataka. National Highway-66 runs through Maravanthe with the beach on one side & River Souparnika on the other. - Malpe (45 km):
A more crowded beach with facility for water sports & other activities. A boat ride from here can take you to the beautiful St. Mary’s Island dotted with distinctive geological formation of columnar basaltic lava. - Kundapur Estuary (2 km):
A beautiful location, where the river Halady meets the Arabian Sea. - Kaup (50 km):
It is a less explored beach whose main attraction is the lighthouse. The beach has a long stretch of sand with a rocky area that has the lighthouse built on it. This contrast provides a unique beach experience for travelers.
Pilgrimage
- Sri Aanegudde Ganesh Temple (5 km):Located on a small hillock; it gets it names from ‘Aane’ meaning elephant & ‘Gudde’ meaning a hillock. It is one of the oldest & most popular temples in the region.
- Kotilingeshwara Temple (2 KM):
A Shiva temple located in Koteshwara, this temple has other smaller shrines also. It has a lake adjacent to it, which is far bigger than the main temple itself. This lake has several interesting legends associated with it. - Kundeswara Temple (4 KM):
A beautiful temple located in the heart of Kundapur. It was built by Kundavarma & is supposed to have lent its name to the town of Kundapur. - Kolluru Mookambika Temple (38 km):
One of the Shakti Pithas established by Shankaracharya, it is a temple that draws crowds from all over the world. The Kodachadri hills form a beautiful backdrop to this almost 1,200 year old temple. - Vinayaka Temple, Guddattu (15 km):
A temple with a history of about 1,700 years, it has a natural cave formation filled with water. This submerges another naturally formed rock similar to a Ganesh Idol.
Krishna Temple, Udupi (38 km):
A famous Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Krishna, located in the town of Udupi. Surrounding the Sri Krishna Matha are several temples namely the Udupi Anantheshwara Temple, which is over a 1,000 years old.
Adventure
- Kodachadri (60 km):
A well-known peak for Trekking enthusiasts, it is located at 1,343 mtr above sea level in the Western Ghats & It is covered in dense forests & is the 10th highest peak in Karnataka. It has also been declared as a natural heritage site by the Govt. of Karnataka. - Sitanadi Nature Camp (60 km):
White Water Rafting & Trekking are the highlights in the region around the camp. Located amidst lush green forests in the foothills of the Western Ghats, it has the River Sita running right through it; providing the perfect setting for rafting in one of the world’s most recognized bio-diverse forests. - Murdeshwar (80 km):
Netrani Islands is approximately 19 km from the coast & is one of the best spots for Scuba Diving in India. & A wide variety of fishes & underwater species can be sighted on dives here. - Koosalli Falls (60 km):
A magnificent waterfall located in deep forest near Koosalli village. It is a 6-step cascading waterfall dropping from a height of 380 feet. One has to trek for 4 km from Koosalli through dense forest, which also includes difficult rock climbing in order to reach the falls. - Arsina Gundi Falls (45 km):
The waterfall is situated inside the Mookambika Wildlife Sanctuary and can be reached only by trekking. The place gets its name from the special effect created by sunrays falling on water droplets.
